Gretchen convinced ZBOA to publish agendas and minutes online 6 December 2011

Gretchen doesn’t just talk about local government transparency; she does something about it. Here online are the agendas and minutes of her appointed board, and here, reposted with permission from Lowndes Area Knowledge Exchange, is how she got that to happen. Elect Gretchen Quarterman tomorrow to Lowndes County Commission District 5 and she will work to bring transparency to your County Commission.

The Zoning Board of Appeals decided unanimously at its 6 December 2011 meeting to publish its agendas and minutes on the City of Valdosta’s website. This item was not on the agenda, but members of such a board can make motions anyway. Member Gretchen Quarterman suggested it. Valdosta City Planner Matt Martin said they could do it no problem. Discussion ensued. They all agreed to post agends before their meetings, and to post minutes after they are approved (usually at the next meeting, a month later). Maybe other local boards and authorities will follow this example.

Absent: Scott Orenstein, Vice-Chair (V), Dr. William Houseal (L). L: Lowndes County appointee. V: Valdosta appointee.

Transparency at the Zoning Board of Appeals

Gretchen doesn’t just talk about transparency, she’s been implementing it for years, and she persuaded the appointed board she’s on to implement it.

Here’s Gretchen at work at Tuesday’s meeting of the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBOA). You can see ZBOA’s agendas and minutes online because Gretchen suggested that December 6th 2011 and ZBOA unanimously agreed to do it, with Valdosta City Planner Matt Martin arranging for the agendas and minutes to be on the City of Valdosta’s website.

Gretchen has suggested that Lowndes County put agendas and minutes of the Planning Commission online, too. So far, Continue reading

“People would have a lot more confidence in the government if they understood it and they could see it happen,” said Gretchen Quarterman yesterday morning on drive-time radio. She used Monday night’s Brookhaven apartment building rezoning public hearing in Lake Park to illustrate: local landowners have property rights and there was a lack of communication between the developers of a proposed apartment building, the Lake Park city government, and the neighbors.

She also talked about jobs, including in local agriculture. For example, she ran the 2014 South Georgia Growing Local Conference. Money spent on local agriculture supports the local economy, not companies far away.

She talked about stewardship of resources, including preserving local property and environment from the Sabal Trail natural gas pipeline. She advocated Continue reading
